Columbus Script



Scene 1

(Columbus is standing in front of Isabella and Ferdinand, who are sitting on a throne while he is standing on stage right, thrones on stage left.)

Columbus:....And thus we will be in the Asias, without having to pass through that barbaric Istanbul. Able to reap the spices and other riches which will make Spain very wealthy, and furthermore this will prove my theory of the earths size. (Columbus bows.)

(Savants enter from stage right, upstage.)

Savants: If you are right, that would make us wrong. And we are never wrong. We are their majesties court savants. our job is to always be right.

(Columbus stops bowing and stands up.)

Columbus:  Silence! You call these your court savants? More like the court fools. Your Highness, This voyage will be fruitful and you know it! Give me the ships, the crew, and some supplies, and I shall make Spain the most powerful empire the world has ever known.

(Savants looks at Columbus timidly.)

Isabella: You make a good case, vassal. (Isabella smiles and nods her head.)

Ferdinand: We will fulfill your requests, though you shall have to get these your self. Here are 12,000 Maravedis. Use them wisely. We will also give a reward to whomever sights land the first.
(Ferdinand hands Columbus the 12,000 Maravedis.)

Columbus: You can trust me, your highness.(Ferdinand gives a brief nod and exits stage left. Isabella follows close behind.)

(Columbus skips off with money exiting stage right, very pleased indeed.)

Sailor1: Calm down. We all know that you are right. (motions to calm down)

Sailor3: Wait. Is that... Is that... Is that land? Land ho!

(Columbus elbows sailor3 out of the way)

Columbus: Move over, inferior! Where is it?! Where is the land?

Sailor3: Over by the blueish water, right above the waves-*Points.

Columbus: Nevermind. Oh look, land! Since I was the first to see it, I get the reward.
